Intravenous (IV) cannulas — often called branül or intraket — are color-coded by gauge (G). A higher gauge number means a thinner cannula. The color tells staff the size at a glance; choosing the right gauge balances flow rate against vein size and patient comfort.
Common color and gauge references
- Orange: 14G.
- Grey: 16G.
- Green: 18G.
- Pink: 20G.
- Blue: 22G.
- Yellow: 24G.
How to choose
A higher gauge number indicates a smaller diameter. Selection of the smallest appropriate diameter for the prescribed treatment belongs to the responsible clinician and institutional protocol. A supplier should verify the ordered gauge, length, model and packaging without deciding the patient's cannula size.
