IV Cannula Color Codes & Gauge Selection (2026 Guide)

IV cannula (branül) color codes, gauge sizes, approximate flow rates and how to choose the right size per patient — a 2026 clinical reference.

Intravenous (IV) cannulas — often called branül or intraket — are color-coded by gauge (G). A higher gauge number means a thinner cannula. The color tells staff the size at a glance; choosing the right gauge balances flow rate against vein size and patient comfort.

Color code, gauge and typical use

  • Orange — 14G: highest flow; major trauma, rapid resuscitation, large-volume transfusion.
  • Grey — 16G: high flow; surgery, trauma, blood products.
  • Green — 18G: blood transfusion, contrast, routine adult IV.
  • Pink — 20G: standard adult use; most infusions and antibiotics.
  • Blue — 22G: smaller/fragile veins, pediatrics, older patients.
  • Yellow — 24G: neonates, infants, very fragile veins.

How to choose

Select the smallest gauge that delivers the required flow. Use larger bore (14–18G) when rapid volume or blood products are needed; use 22–24G for fragile veins and pediatric patients. Flow rate rises sharply with bore, so do not over-size for routine maintenance fluids.
